It can get incredibly overwhelming when you’re trying to find the perfect gift for someone. Multiply that overwhelm by 500 when that someone is a child. There are just SO MANY toys out there that it’s hard to know which ones are going to get the most bang for your buck.
So today I’ve broken down some of our favorite toys for 12-18 month old girls. The vast majority of these toys we have and love. Others we’ve heard rave reviews about and are planning to buy for Little Miss for Christmas. I didn’t include any books on this list because I’ve already done an entire post about our favorite board books. And although I do love books, I figured adding them to this list would be overkill.

We’ve had this tent for a few months now and it’s been a hit! Little Miss loves going inside of it and hiding or just playing with her toys. It’s big enough that The Mister and I have both been in it with her. The tent is easy to put together, but I’ll be honest- we haven’t taken it apart since we got it, so I can’t tell you how easily it disassembles and stores. I don’t think it would be too hard though, with how easy it was to set up.
This shopping cart is on our Christmas list for Little Miss. She loves pushing things and putting all of her toys into baskets, so we figure a shopping cart will be the perfect combination. I’m thinking she will love this gift!
I’m pretty sure the Cozy Coupe has been a staple children’s toy since I was a kid. Little Miss has one at her grandparents’ house and absolutely adores it! It’s great for working on gross motor skills (opening and closing the door, getting in and out) and problem solving (“My feet are stuck! How do I fix this?”). I know the car will grow with her and she will play with it for a long time.
This was a Christmas gift last year, and Little Miss loves swinging! This swing is good up to 50 pounds and is adjustable as your child grows. We put ours on the back porch and it’s very durable. It is also easy to take down and put away in off-seasons or if a tornado is coming. I might know that last part from experience!
In an attempt to get her wiggles out on a long car ride while on vacation this summer, we borrowed a friend’s play tunnel and got it out at rest stops for Little Miss to crawl through. It worked wonders and so we had to buy our own when we got home. She enjoys crawling through it and tossing her toys to the other side. She also thinks it’s hilarious to get in the middle of it and sit and look through the mesh top. Whatever makes you happy, kid! It is easy to fold up and secures with Velcro and it also comes with a storage bag.
We got this water table for Little Miss for her first birthday. I knew it would be a hit, but I never imagined she would play with it as much as she has over the summer. Even when it doesn’t have water in it, she likes playing with it! The water table will grow with her as she plays in different ways when she is older. This year was mainly just splashing, but by the end of the summer she had figured out how to put the balls down the spiral and turn the Ferris wheel.
I’m pretty sure the wagon Little Miss has at her grandparents’ house is an older model than this one, but regardless, she loves it anyway! She likes to be pulled around the yard and wave at all of her fans. Not even kidding.
We’re entering the age of the Little People at our house, which I’m actually finding to be really fun! This house folds up nicely and makes all kinds of fun “house” sounds like a doorbell, toilet flushing, etc. This is a toy that I foresee us playing with a lot in the future!
Another birthday present, this picnic basket has been a hit! At first she just liked taking the contents of the picnic basket out and putting them back in. Now she’s getting to the age where she likes to pretend that she’s eating and feeding other people, so the cups and food items are heavily used around our house! Soon she will start learning shapes and then she can match the shapes of the food to the shapes on the plate. This is a really fun, educational toy!
I kind of love this little piggy. So far Little Miss just likes opening and closing the piggy bank and she’s learning how to get the coins into the slot. As she gets older it will help her with counting and sorting the different colored coins, which makes my teacher heart happy!
Little Miss plays with this Noah’s Ark in her Bible class at church and loves making all of the animal sounds. As she gets older it will be fun to let her tell the story of Noah while playing with the ark!
This is Little Miss’s first baby doll and she loves it. It’s plush and soft and great to cuddle with. I like how basic this doll is because really, she doesn’t need a doll that cries and pees and drinks a bottle just yet. Those will come later. This baby is a perfect first doll.
Little Miss is fascinated by bags, and especially my purse. She loves taking things out of it and putting (mostly) everything back in. So this purse is on her Christmas list. I like that it’s something that she practice her favorite skill- filling and emptying, and as she gets older she can pretend play with her purse.
This was another birthday gift that Little Miss loves! I like that there are three levels to work through, with each getting a little more complex. Skills range from body part and color identification to letters and numbers and there are several songs that Little Miss likes to dance along to. Sis is also easy to turn off whether you don’t want her singing from the toy box or you just want some peace and quiet for now.
We are just entering the phase of understanding puzzles and I love these jumbo knob puzzles from Melissa & Doug! They are easy for little hands to grip and the puzzles have large pieces that are simple for toddlers to maneuver. Plus this one has farm animals, which are Little Miss’s favorites these days!
This is another item on our Christmas list this year. Little Miss loves hammering and music, so this seems like the perfect combination! I can’t wait to see what kind of fun we have with this gift.
17. Ball Pit Balls
I never realized how many uses there are for ball pit balls with a toddler! You can sort them by color, put them in the bathtub, throw them or put them in a playpen and make a ball pit. Right now I have Little Miss’s playpen filled with ball pit balls in my office so that she can play while I get some work done. She loves it and The Mister and I love getting in it with her and playing! We have this set of pit balls and they’ve held up very well. Even with adults accidentally stepping on them, they’re still in great shape!
We bought foam blocks for Little Miss this past summer and for the longest time she just liked dumping them out of the container and throwing them. Then she liked knocking over anything I built, but suddenly, she’s started stacking them herself. She is so proud and it’s kind of adorable. I can’t wait to see what kind of structures she will build as she gets older! I also love that these are foam. They don’t hurt when she falls on them or throws them at me (or the dogs). She’s bitten them and they don’t come apart, which is nice. (Note: We don’t have this exact set, but these are very similar.)
This is a toy that will grow with Little Miss. She got it for her birthday and loves hearing all of the animal sounds. Right now she can’t use it independently because she can’t pull the lever all the way down on her own yet.
What is it about phones that toddlers are so interested in? Little Miss tries to get my phone all day, and when she does, she can’t get past the lock screen, so I’m not sure what the thrill is about. But for Christmas, she is going to get her very own pretend phone! Maybe this one will take the focus off of mine!
I was sad to see that this toy has been discontinued since we love it so much, but you can still find it online. Little Miss is a one woman band with this set, which includes drum sticks, jingle bells, a maraca and clacker, a tambourine and shaker and it makes her band nerd mama very happy! I really like that all of the percussion instruments fit inside of the drum and as a bonus, they’re adorable bugs!
